Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare

BACKGROUND

Shakespeare lived in England from 1564 - 1616, where he wrote many plays and poems. His plays fall into three categories – histories, tragedies, and comedies. "Macbeth" is one of Shakespeare’s tragedies. The story here is about Macbeth’s struggle for power – he wants to be king. By the way, if you want to annoy your actor friends, say the word "Macbeth" backstage at one of their plays – actors believe it brings bad luck to the show.

MAIN CHARACTERS

Macbeth: The main dude of the story. He’s a little weird guy. He is really ambitious, like he wants to be king and will do anything to get what he wants, but he feels really guilty about all the bad stuff he does. He starts out as a nice guy, but becomes corrupted by power. Throughout the story he becomes more and more insane and towards the end the guy is a complete wacko. Macbeth gets killed in the end.

Lady Macbeth: Macbeth’s wife. She is really smart but an evil bitch. She will do anything to get power and success. She has Macbeth kill so they will have more power. In the end she kills herself.

Banquo: A soldier who is Macbeth’s friend. Brave and a nice guy, he doesn’t give into temptation. He has honor. Too bad he gets killed.

Malcolm: The son of King Duncan. Malcolm is picked to be the next king by his daddy. In the story, Malcolm takes on Macbeth and wins.

Three Witches: Also called the "weird sisters." They are real witches with magical powers. They can control the weather and disappear into thin air. During the story they keep giving Macbeth predictions of the future.

Macduff: He is Macbeth’s #1 enemy. His family gets killed. In the end, Macduff kills Macbeth.

Duncan: He is a nice old king. His son is Malcolm. Duncan is going to give the throne to Malcolm, but he gets killed.

PLOT

The three witches practice some witchcraft stuff, and talk about meeting a dude named Macbeth. Then the story cuts to a military camp, where there is a rebellion against King Duncan of Scotland). The king is really old and asks some soldier how the war is going. The soldier tells the king the war is a big bloodbath. Then he tells the king that some dude named Macbeth was a big hero and kicked ass in the battles. Then this dude Ross (a Thane – Thanes are noblemen) shows up and tells the king that the Thane of Cawdor, who was a captain in the king’s army, is a dirty traitor. Then the king finds out his army won the war. So he kills the Thane of Cawdor and makes Macbeth his new captain.

Then the story cuts to Macbeth. Macbeth doesn’t know he’s the new captain yet. He is with his buddy, Banquo, another soldier, and they meet the three witches. The witches tell them some predictions -- that Macbeth will be the new captain, that Macbeth will be king, and that Banquo’s kids will be kings.

Then Macbeth finds out he is the new captain. He is really psyched because it was one of the witches’ predictions. So now Macbeth thinks he’s gonna be the next king, too. But the king makes his son the new king. Then they story cuts to Macbeth’s house. He lives in a big castle in Dunsinane Hill. His wife, lady Macbeth, reads a letter from him about the three witches. She wants Macbeth to be king. So when King Duncan comes to visit, they plan to murder him so Macbeth can be the new king.

Macbeth has a party, and at the party, he kills the king. Afterwards, Macbeth feels really guilty. The next day people find the body and Macbeth acts like he is shocked. He acts like he is mad that someone would kill the king (even though he did it). So even though he’s pretending to be mad, he kills some of the king’s servants, saying that they killed the king. The king’s son, Malcolm, the guy who should be the next king gets scared of Macbeth and he takes off.

After all this, Macbeth makes himself the new king. Macbeth is happy because this prediction from the witches came true, too. But Macbeth goes wacko, and remembers that Banquo’s kids will all be kings. Since he doesn’t want any competition, he tries to kill Banquo and his son. Banquo’s son escapes though and is not killed. Now Macbeth goes bonkers and is really paranoid. He has a big dinner party. At the party, he sees Banquo’s ghost and becomes really mad.

Macbeth is paranoid and crazy, so he goes back to talk to the 3 witches. They give him 3 more predictions: That Macbeth should be afraid of this dude named Macduff, that Macbeth will never get hurt by any guy who was born through a woman, and that he will never lose his throne until some forest named Birnam wood moves to a place called Dunsinane Hill. Macbeth is happy because two of those predictions are silly and almost impossible (how can a man not be born by a woman giving birth to him? and how can a whole forest pick up and move to another town?).

The witches’ predictions start to come true. The dude named Macduff goes to hang out with the ex-King’s son, Malcolm. They talk about how they are going to kick Macbeth’s ass. Macbeth finds out about the meeting and goes psycho. He kills Macduff's family. Then Macduff gets really pissed. He and his buddy Malcolm get an army and go to kill Macbeth.

Back at Macbeth’s castle in Dunsinane Hill, his life is going down the drain. His wife is insane. Nobody likes him anymore. He is a bad king. Then Macduff and Malcolm’s army march towards Macbeth’s castle. To disguise themselves, they use branches from the Birnam Wood forest (Get it.... Birnam Wood is moving to Dunsinane Hill, like the witches predicted). One of Macbeth’s soldiers tells him about this and Macbeth is going bonkers at this point because all of the witches’ predictions are coming true. Then the battle between Malcolm’s army and Macbeth’s army starts. Macduff and Macbeth get into a fight. Macbeth tells him that he cannot be killed by any man who was born by a woman. Macduff tells him he wasn’t "born" by a woman, the doctors did a C-Section, so he was "taken out" not "born." Then Macduff kills Macbeth, chops off his head, and carries it around. Malcolm is made the new king.
